Petone Kindergarten Newsletter....

November 2012
Welcome to the second to last newsletter for the year. Welcome also to all our new families and children. It’s great to see you here. We are well underway with term 4 (where has the time gone already?!) There have been some exciting new initiatives happening at Kindy this term, with the beginning of our new Blog—please have a look on; http://petonekindergarten.blogspot.co.nz/
On that note, please ensure you look at the information and decide if you are  happy for your child’s photos and stories to be on our blog. There are many options you can choose but we need to know what you agree to. Thanks.

Parent get together
We thought it was about time to have a get together to have a chat, meet each other and share how things are going at Kindy. The get together is happening on Tuesday 20th November at 1.30-2.45. This allows plenty of time to pick up the older children from school too.  Everyone is welcome, please do come.

Emergency Phone
We have now set up a cell phone in which we will take with us in the event of an emergency. The number is 027 9201840. It is SO IMPORTANT that you text this number with your name and child’s name so we have your details and PLEASE keep this number stored in your phone also. We expect lots of texts in the next few weeks.

Holly Walker
The Green Party MP is coming to visit on Friday 14th December. Please come along and chat with her.  We would like to present Holly with information about how funding cuts have affected us and how much you parents appreciate having 100% trained teachers. If you would like to put anything in writing, we would really appreciate that. If you are unclear about this issue, please talk to the teachers or google “100% qualified teachers”—there are heaps of sites with information online.

Levity Beet performing at Kindergarten
He is a wonderful children’s entertainer and will be coming to tell stories and play crazy instruments. This is great fun and a special treat for the end of the year for both groups.  It will be on 18th and 19th December.

Fish and Chip night
To celebrate Christmas, we would like to invite all the families along to a fish and chip night on Friday 14th December. Bring the whole whanau and your food of choice (it doesn’t have to be fish and chips). We will have picnic areas set up, Christmas music and maybe even some ddecorations. We’d love to see you here.

Committee Meeting
Thank you so much to all the parents who came to our last meeting—what a great turn out! We have some exciting new things happening with a great new and enthusiastic committee. The next meeting is Wednesday 28th November at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome, committee meetings are a public forum.

Movie night
James Bond— need we say more??? SKY FALL is the latest in the Bond series. Come along and support the Kindergarten on Wednesday 5th December at 7.30 for drinks and nibbles. $20 a ticket.

Flax Weaving Workshop

Run by Selena Shaw and Krystal Warbrick from Forever Flax.
One of our mums, Selena and her colleague Krystal is holding a flax weaving workshop on Sunday 2nd       December here at Kindergarten 10am—4pm. It is a one day workshop where you can make gorgeous flowers and baskets (see photo). NO experience necessary and just in time for Christmas. These fantastic creations make wonderful Christmas gifts. The workshop cost $50 and all proceeds go towards the Kindergarten.  Lunch is provided.  Places will fill up fast! Please email
selenaandtom@vodafone.co.nz to enrol.

Thank you for all your wonderful support, you guys are great and you make our      Kindergarten the amazing place it is!

Petone Kindergarten Newsletter ~ Term 4 ~ October 2012
Breaking news!
Petone Kindergarten Blog goes live!

At Petone Kindergarten we are always looking for ways to connect and communicate with you. We recognise that our children are 21st century learners whose families use a whole range of useful ways to access and share information. We are taking part in an association professional development programme supporting the use of technology with children and families- the ICT Wonder Project. You can read about this project here:  http://wondering aboutict.blogspot.co.nz/
We are in the process of setting up our own open blog – where we can share in a new way about how learning happens in this place. We would love your feedback – take a peek at: http://petonekindergarten.blogspot.co.nz  There are links on there to other kindergarten blogs, education sites, information about blogging safety. There is a scanned copy of a booklet about the history of Petone Kindergarten that was written in 1973. Take a look…
We would love to include the learning journeys we observe and kindergarten events. These will still be documented in children’s profiles and displayed on the walls – but often the instant nature of uploading to the blog gives families and peers a chance to be involved in an entirely new format. You will be able to add your comments (these will be moderated by the teachers) to contribute your ideas to our learning community.  SO – please take time to chat with a team member if you have any questions about your child being included in the blogging community. There are different ways to be included: in group events and learning stories without being named, in individual stories using a name or just an initial, with a narrated Photostory, as a contributor alongside a teacher. We are planning to use diverse examples to show learning and to continue learning.
BE PART OF OUR PARENT COMMITTEE – come along to the 1st meeting for the term on Wednesday 24th October at 7.30pm - our committee is a vital group who help support the teachers to provide a great learning environment for the children. This is an amazing way to get to know how the place runs and to contribute in any way you are able.
DO YOU know a special person who would love to be a regular volunteer at kindergarten? We are hoping to find a few people who could commit to regular times here so that we can extend our current programme.
On Tuesday 20th November we are having a PARENT WELCOME TIME – 1.30 – 2.45pm come along to meet people, ask questions & chat about kindergarten life.
Term dates: Term 4 Monday 15th October to Friday 21st December 2012
Regards from Raylene, Helen, Nicolette, Camellia & Lisa
